Housing crisis

We won’t solve the housing crisis until the TDs attack the Nimby Brigade

“The impact this development will have on the Pale-bellied Brent Goose is of particular concern,” said Fianna Fáil TD Sean Haughey in opposing a recent bid for Dublin City Council. The scheme would provide around 600 new apartments on a derelict site in Raheny in Mr Haughey’s constituency.

The brant goose is a protected species, so you need a special permit to shoot them. But the species is not endangered and the number of wintering birds in Ireland is stable or increasing, according to ornithologists. These geese find their sustenance in estuaries around the country, including Dublin Bay, Wexford Slobs and Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland. Seasonal visitors to their arctic breeding grounds, they also graze grass in nearby coastal areas and can be seen in public parks, on golf courses and in housing estates around the city and suburbs of Dublin.
