Housing sector and municipalities call for 1 million new homes by 2031

A group of people – including representatives from the housing and insurance sectors – have presented a plan that will see the construction of one million new homes in the Netherlands over the next 10 years.

Building more affordable and sustainable housing in the Netherlands

A group of 34 organisations, including representatives from municipalities and provinces in the Netherlands and from the banking and mental health sectors, calls on the next cabinet to ensure the construction of more affordable housing, in order to tackle the national housing crisis .

According to the plan, the Netherlands now lacks more than 330,000 homes: “An entire generation risks losing connection to the housing market,” they argue. The Housing Action Program therefore calls for an increase in the rate of construction from 71,000 to 100,000 houses a year “so that more affordable rental and owned accommodation becomes available”.

Provide housing for all and fight against rising prices

The plan also highlights the fact that the quality of life in various neighborhoods across the country is declining, and the groups want to see improved sustainable infrastructure and quality housing for all: “We are concerned about vulnerable neighborhoods and residents who sometimes need other forms of help and care than what is available to them, said Martin van Rijn, chairman of lobby group Aedes.

In order to provide housing for all, the plan proposes that one third of new housing will be social housing, another third in the so-called middle sector and one third in the free sector, and the houses built will include both properties rental and sale.

In addition to this, the Housing Action Program includes plans to make and keep housing affordable; for example, by limiting rent increases in the middle sector to 1% above inflation.

The Dutch government invests more than 260 million in affordable housing

This week, the Dutch government announced that it is investing 266 million euros in accelerating the construction of mostly affordable housing. The investment will support 30 development projects across the country – including three in The Hague – and see the construction of nearly 45,000 new homes by 2023 at the latest.

The plan is that 67% of construction will be considered affordable housing – a mix of social housing, housing with a monthly rent between 700 and 1,000 euros and housing with a purchase price below the mortgage guarantee limit. national (325,000 euros in 2021).
