Overcoming the housing affordability crisis in Ontario requires coordinated leadership from all levels of government to align our policies, focus our resources and work together to make homeownership more affordable and accessible for Ontarians.

This Wednesday, under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is hosting the Ontario Housing Affordability Summit — with big-city mayors and regional presidents — followed by a roundtable on mid-town housing affordability. Rural with Rural, Remote and Northern Municipalities on Sunday, January 23. , to assess what works and what else we can do to overcome the issues that are preventing more Ontarians from affording a place to call home.

While our government has made progress, creating the conditions for the highest number of housing starts in a decade and the highest number of rental housing starts in Ontario history since 1992, there is still work to be done to make the dream of home ownership a reality for more Ontarians. Ontario has built more homes year over year because of our government’s progressive policy decisions, such as streamlining the Building Code to allow smaller homes, supporting new condominium options, and exempting or deferral of development costs on non-profit housing and rentals that help low-income and marginalized Ontarians. We will also provide more than $3 billion between 2020 and 2022 through our Community Housing Renewal Strategy to strengthen affordable and supportive housing options for our most vulnerable Ontarians.

While we have made progress in increasing housing supply, the challenges facing Ontarians outlined in Scotiabank’s recent housing report paint a bleak picture of the urgent need to build even more homes. faster, concluding that Ontario would need an additional 1.2 million homes to match the average housing-to-capita ratio as our G7 peers.

The demand is ubiquitous and growing. New housing starts are stalled, stalled and stifled by bureaucracy, further driving up home prices and making the dream of home ownership out of reach for many Ontarians.

This means having a responsible and balanced plan that facilitates the densification and revitalization of urban areas, removes barriers to the creation of missing intermediate homes and opens up more land to build the homes families need.
